Built from Grit, Guts, and Gasoline

SOME shops are born out of business plans. Others, like Dakota Kustomz, are born out of busted knuckles and pure accident, honestly. Owner Travis Feist didn’t set out to build one of the most respected custom truck shops in the North Dakota region. Back in 2001, his brother worked at a Ford dealership and needed someone to install lift kits, leveling kits, and fender flares. Travis stepped in to lend a hand, and what started as side work blew up in eight months into a full-time gig. Just like that, Dakota Kustomz was on the map.

Travis isn’t one to brag. He’ll tell you straight up that Dakota Kustomz isn’t “better” than any other shop; it’s just different. While most builders stick to one niche, Travis and his crew will wrench on just about anything with, or even without, a motor. From full-blown truck builds to custom metalwork, they handle it all under one roof. His approach is simple: meet the customer, learn their story, and start visualizing the build as they talk. Every project gets built first in his head before a single wrench turns.

Ask him what the biggest challenge is, and he’ll tell you that it’s finding people who love the grind as much as he does. Building custom rides takes patience, vision, and a whole lot of late nights—things you just can’t fake. And if you’ve ever watched a truck show on TV and thought you could knock one out in a weekend, Travis will be the first to tell you, “Don’t believe everything you see on TV. Real builds take time.”

His approach is simple: meet the customer, learn their story, and start visualizing the build as they talk. Every project gets built first in his head before a single wrench turns.

One build that stands out to him isn’t a truck at all; it’s a 1923 Ford T-Bucket. A customer who had been working on it for 45 years and was battling Stage IV cancer asked Travis to finish it. The Dakota Kustomz crew made it their top priority. When the customer saw it completed, a single tear rolled down his face—a moment Travis says he’ll never forget.

Right now, he’s gearing up for a dream build of his: a 1992 Chevy crew cab dually that has been 20 years in the making. If his past work is any clue, you might just see that dually grace the cover of Street Trucks one day. Stay tuned!
