Keith Francis’ Frame-Off ’77 F-100

SOME trucks are projects. Some are family. Keith Francis’s 1977 Ford F-100 falls squarely in the second category. This isn’t a flip, a trend build, or a weekend makeover. It’s a truck that has been part of one man’s life for more than three decades, through military service, hard seasons, and finally retirement. So when the time came, Keith didn’t just freshen it up. He tore it down to the bones and rebuilt it his way.

Keith, an automotive instructor out of Henrico, Virginia, and a proud Army veteran, says the reason behind the build is simple: the truck means something. He has owned it for over 30 years. “We’ve seen some difficult times together,” he explains. After retiring from the military, he decided it deserved a full frame-off rebuild instead of another patch job.

It’s a truck that has been part of one man’s life for more than three decades, through military service, hard seasons, and finally retirement. So when the time came, Keith didn’t just freshen it up. He tore it down to the bones and rebuilt it his way.

The outside keeps the classic F-100 shape but tightens everything up with clean upgrades. A new chrome grille leads the nose, backed by blue halo headlights from LMC Truck. Out back, a new chrome bumper with integrated fog lights balances the look, while trailer-style taillights add a little edge. The bed was rebuilt using a 1986 F-150 box and finished with a custom laminated floor that gives the truck that proper vintage-meets-modern feel. Keith sprayed the custom blue basecoat and clear coat himself in Richmond, laying down a finish that proves the instructor still knows his way around a gun.

F-100 WorldUnder the hood, things take a serious jump forward. Power comes from a 5.4L DOHC V8 out of a 2005 Lincoln Navigator, mounted with custom brackets and wired using a Ron Francis harness. A custom rear-exit exhaust handles the flow, while a 4R100 automatic backs it up. The drivetrain is supported with a transmission cooler, a custom driveshaft, and a 2007 F-150 Heritage rear axle with 3.73 gears and a limited-slip differential.

Keith’s not done yet, as turbos are on the future list. After 30 years together, this F-100 still has more road ahead.

The chassis blends old and new Ford engineering, running a Crown Vic-based setup with rack-and-pinion steering, a 2006 Crown Vic front suspension, and a triangulated four-link with adjustable coilovers out back. Fourteen-inch front discs and a 2005 F-150 master cylinder bring modern stopping power.

Inside, the truck gets comfort upgrades with Mazda seats wrapped in marine fabric, a Mark LT cluster and dash, an F-150 wheel, Vintage Air climate control, power accessories, and a Pioneer head unit.

Keith’s not done yet, as turbos are on the future list. After 30 years together, this F-100 still has more road ahead.
