Paul Wheeler traded his custom ‘94 Silverado for this ’84 Suburban in an attempt to shake things up a little. The ‘Burb already had some work done, so he began by tackling the frame and suspension. He did the work in his friend Jason Freeman’s barn and in his parent’s garage with help from friend Jason Burkett.
A full frame crafted from 2 x 4 inch tubing was built with a Ford 8.8 rearend that was shortened 6 inches using Moser axles in back surrounded by a 4 link setup. A Watt’s link keeps things on track. Up front, Paul installed 3 inch drop spindles with custom made control arms. He went big on the wheels with 24 x 10 and 26 x 10 Raceline Smoothie billets wrapped in Kumho 275/30 and 295/30 tires, respectively.
Next, the body was reworked with metal finished, shaved handles and roof seams. The gas filler was relocated and the factory grille was reworked to invite a special guest up front, an intercooler. After that, Paul took the entire truck down to bare metal. Then, Paul and Travis Cope lightly sprayed DuPont Sea Foam Green and white over the truck and sanded it down before trimming an ex haust port on the front fender to expel the coal from a 1995 Dodge Ram Cummins outfitted with a 60mm tur bo from a 2005 Cummins engine. The diesel engine was rebuilt and wired up with a Painless wiring harness.
Paul plans to finish the Suburban in factory colors with a set of bomber style bench seats in the interior. He would like to thank Jason Freeman, Jason Burkett, Mike, Justin, Travis Cope, Aftermath and his parents. ST
