2006 GM Hummer

When Hummer and parent company GM introduced its H2 Hummer in 2003 it was definitely a vehicle that made an impact on the thriving SUV market. In a class of its own, the Hummer’s size alone was intimidating. GM wanted to offer a more practical vehicle than the one designed for military tactical use, the Humvee H1. The H2’s massive size and military Humvee-inspired styling made it standout in a crowd of other SUVs. Its menacing appearance on city streets made it seem like a bodybuilder at a sewing class.

GM introduced another H2 model, the H2 SUT, half pickup half SUV, in 2005. The SUT’s bold look, luxurious interior and off-road performance made it 100% Hummer. The H2 SUT featured a 72-inch bed, powerful E85 ethanol Flex-Fuel-capable 6.2L V-8 SFI engine that generated horsepower and torque numbers most SUVs only dreamed about. Unfortunately the GM Hummer program was discontinued when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Mike Coy from McKinney, Texas has been a hot rod, custom car and truck enthusiast since he was a teenager. A couple of years ago, Mike was working at Complete Customs in McKinney, which specializes in 4×4 fabrication and lifting trucks and SUVs. While he was there, GM’s H2 Hummers were a hot SUV with their military/utility identity and massive size. During that time one of his buddies, Derik Beard, was the proud owner of an ’06 H2 Hummer. In their social circle, Derik’s Hummer was always the butt of jokes, and Mike was one of the loudest jokesters. A while later, Mike found out that Derik was selling his H2, and in an ironic twist, Mike bought it and found himself building it for a past SEMA Show.

MIKE FOUND OUT THAT DERIK WAS SELLING HIS H2, AND IN AN IRONIC TWIST, MIKE BOUGHT IT AND FOUND HIMSELF BUILDING IT FOR THE 2013 SEMA SHOW. ”

Just after the SEMA Show, Mike began receiving his paychecks from Richard Rawlings at Gas Monkey Garage in Dallas. Rawlings and sidekick Aaron Kaufman and the rest of the monkeys have since become custom car/truck culture celebrities. Gas Monkey Garage recently opened its doors to Street Truck’s Editor Kevin Aguilar, who has developed a relationship with Richard and his crew. ST
