New Chrome from National Parts Depot

You may remember a few issues back, we did some weekend warrior upgrades to this clean Squarebody driver, including a new Borgeson steering box. Today we decided to focus on the front end, specifically the old dented and oxidized front bumper. The truck has a clean paint job and looks fresh from all angles, but the bumper takes some of the glory out of the overall vibe of this truck. We also want to install some bumper guards since this is a driver and it’s often parked in big box store parking lots with drivers that don’t pay much attention.

Thankfully for us, we live around 10 minutes away from National Parts Depot. I’m sure most of you know this great retailer of classic truck parts, but if you don’t, let me school you for a second. National Parts Depot, also known as NPD, was founded in 1976 and is a leading supplier of restoration and performance parts for classic Ford and GM vehicles. Originally established as a mail-order business, NPD built its reputation through detailed catalogs that continue to serve as a core part of its operation today. With four warehouse locations across the country, including Ventura, California; Canton, Michigan; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Ocala, Florida, NPD has become one of the largest restoration parts suppliers in the industry. The company specializes in parts for iconic American classics such as Mustangs, Camaros, Ford trucks, Broncos, and more, supporting both weekend wrenchers and seasoned builders with the components needed to keep vintage rides alive and on the road.

Most of the parts we need for our trucks are in stock and ready to pick up at any time, including a new front bumper for our 1978 Chevy C10. For bumper guards, we ordered them online from Quality Classic Parts. Now that we have all the parts we needed to clean up the front of this classic custom, it’s time to start wrenching!

Removing the original bumper is easy to do, but before you start cranking on the rusty bolts, spray them down with some penetrating lubricant so you’re not snapping metal.

We will be reusing these brackets, so removing them from the original bumper is necessary.
Before reinstalling them on the new bumper, we wanted to coat them in black paint.

We also wanted to take the time to buff the panel between the grille and the bumper since you can’t access it easily when the bumper is installed.

Now we can add the new bumper guards from Quality Classic Parts onto our NPD bumpers. Be sure to do this before bolting the bumper to the truck.

Next is adding the freshly painted original bumper brackets onto the new bumper.

This can be a one-person job, but if you have a friend to help hold the bumper up, it’s a whole lot easier.

The great thing about working on these old trucks is the simplicity behind them—nuts, bolts, brackets, and plenty of room to work. This is not the case with modern trucks these days.
The final button-head bolts go in from the front, and the install is complete.
Polishing is recommended since these new parts usually come with some type of oil coating on them to prevent oxidation while in storage.

That is a great-looking driver! The new bumper now complements the clean paint job, and the bumper guards will protect it from all those close parkers at the local grocery store.
