Maximizing the Potential of Your Pickup Truck’s Bed

When it comes to using a truck for the reason they were invented, hauling cargo and moving large or heavy objects, you don’t want to be restricted. An open pickup bed is versatile, but what if you have valuables or cargo that might fly away or become damaged in the open elements? The solution is a tonneau cover to secure and cover the bed. There are many different options, and companies such as BAK Industries offer a variety of tonneau covers. One of its most innovative and functional is the Roll-X tonneau cover that allows you not only to protect and secure your cargo, but also roll up the cover so that you can use the entire bed. No longer are you restricted to hauling objects that are only 2 feet high. Unfortunately, you will no longer have an excuse when that long lost friend calls to ask you to help them move their couch.

The Roll-X cover is made up of rows of extruded aircraft-grade aluminum slats tightly connected to form the flush-fit-style cover. For a clean look and weather protection, the aluminum is covered in black Tuff-Back marine vinyl with rubber overlaps. The side rail system self-locks as the cover is unrolled and latched; combined with a locking tailgate handle, you’ll have a completely secured cargo area from cab to tailgate.

Because the Roll-X tonneau cover lies between the stake pockets it allows other accessories to be added, retaining the functionality of the rest of the bed. A set of bull rings can be installed into the pockets, allowing tie down straps or ropes to be used to secure cargo. The bull rings retract so that the bed rails remain flush when the rings aren’t in use. Tool racks and other accessories can also be used with the Roll-X tonneau cover, which means you can keep your tools and other valuables secured underneath the cover, and you can place ladders, bicycles and other items on the top rack. In case you find yourself lacking a suitable table while on the job, the cover features a vinyl covering over the aluminum and can support up to 400 pounds safely. [01] Here are all of the components of the Roll-X tonneau cover from BAK Industries. The only tool necessary (aside from a pair of hands) is a ½-inch socket wrench.
[02] The first step is to set up the side rails. The rubber gasket seals the bed from water and comes right up to the stake pockets, keeping them uncovered for use.
[03] The side rails should be set up with the end 1/8-inch from the tailgate.
[04] The rails will be secured to the bed rails using the provided clamps which lock into the grooves to avoid coming loose over time.

[05] Before each clamp is tightened, the rail is tapped to ensure that it will seal tightly to the bed rail and the clamp will secure into the grooves properly.

[06] Because our truck does not have a bedliner, a rubber gasket is applied to the bulkhead to seal the front of the cover.
[07] The front of the cover is secured to the side rails using the supplied rubber washer, metal washers and adjustable knob.

[08] The Roll-X cover can roll up and be secured at the front of the bed using the attached nylon straps. This allows for plenty of open bed space without obstructing your rear view.
[09] Bumpers are applied to the aluminum slats on the rolled cover to protect the cab’s rear and window.

[10] The cover locks into the side rail as it’s unrolled. Some alignment might be necessary during installation to ensure that all of the slats lock in place.
[11] To ensure proper alignment and latching, the rear of the rail features an adjustable mechanism to correctly align the latch.

[13] To release the latch, a simple pull cable is hidden under the cover. With a locked tailgate, the entire bed can be secured.

[14] The Roll-X tonneau cover does not cover the stake pockets, allowing you to install bed rails, racks and accessories.

[15] Accessories can include bull rings that easily install into the stake pockets with a retractable ring for tie- down hooks.

[16] With full use of the bed and stake pockets, you can haul whatever you like regardless of height, or protect cargo under the secured cover.
[17] Fully rolled and secured, the Roll-X cover takes up very little space, providing an unobstructed view of your cargo and surroundings.
