Getting the Best out of Your Engine With Edge’s Evolution CTS
In today’s world of rising gasoline prices everyone is looking at options to improve gas mileage and still maintain engine performance. Ford’s 3.5L Eco-Boost twin turbo V-6, which produces 420 lb-ft of torque and 365 hp was introduced in 2011 to power its F-150 pickups. Ford’s intentions were to build a fuel-efficient engine that would still deliver torque and power. According to the EPA the Ford F-150 2WD equipped with an EcoBoost V-6 delivers 16/22-mpg city/highway.
We will be installing an Edge Evolution CTS (Col or Touch Screen) programmer in a ‘12 Ford F-150 2WD 3.5L EcoBoost twin turbo V-6 power plant. Edge’s Evolution CTS will extend the EcoBoost’s performance parameters, torque, horsepower and fuel mileage. The Edge Evolution CTS in-cab monitor and digital display is a full color high-resolution 4.3-inch touch-screen device. A rugged case protects the CTS and the unit features an easy-to-navigate menu and a light sensitivity meter that automatically adjusts the brightness for improved viewing during day and night driving. The CTS comes equipped with a video-in port that allows the user to connect to Edge’s state-of-the-art back-up camera (sold separately) or any compatible off-the- shelf backup camera or video source. The Evolution CTS monitor will be mounted inside an Edge custom dash pod (P/N 18351) that will make it look factory.
Whether you are towing, racing or just enjoying your daily cruise, the Edge Evolution CTS Programmer will suit you needs. When all was said and done, the Race tune on the Ecoboost allowed both turbos to fire simultaneously for 17 psi of boost. When babied, the truck jumped from 13 mpg to more than 20 mpg! Picking up a couple extra miles when driven like it should be.ST
[01] Edge’s Evolution CTS in-cab programmer allows for four performance settings. It will continuously communicate with the engine’s ECU, fuel management system and transmission. The Evolution also logs in engine performance, 0- 60-mph time, ¼-mile E.T. and mph, recalibrates tire sizes and adjusts transmission shift points.[02] To begin, we removed the driver’s side A- pillar molding.[03] A little trimming was done using a Dremel tool to create clearance for the Evolution monitor cable.[04] The Evolution monitor cable was plugged into the OBDII port under the dash.[05] The monitor was popped into the dash pod, and then test fit above the AC vent.[06] To secure the dash pod, the dash surface was cleaned with a solvent provided in the kit.[07] Also included in the kit were adhesive Velcro strips and mounting tabs to secure the dash pod to the dash surface.[08] The Evolution was activated, powering up the program menu.[09] Simply touching the OEM selection icon and tapping enter starts the process.[10] Select either manual or automatic transmission.[11] A number of different parameters can be viewed as either a digital list or as full- color, analog-style gauges.[12] The Evolution monitor’s main menu allows us to select Programming, Diagnostics, Maintenance Manager, Options or Help.[13] “Options” provides multiple choices.[14] To recalibrate tire size, simply input the information and the system adjusts the transmission shift points.[15] Tire size input (33/12.50R17).[16] The Edge back-up camera is sold separately and is compatible with the Evolution programmer. The CTS’s high-res 4.3-inch color screen allows us to clearly see what is behind the truck when the transmission is put in reverse.[17] An access hole was drilled into the rear license plate. The back-up camera ground cable was connected to a ground source, while the RCA cable was inserted into the license plate hole run along the frame rail. A small hole was drilled into the floor panel on the driver’s side so that the RCA cable could be connected to the CTS monitor.[18] The Edge back-up camera with LED night vision lighting was neatly mounted onto the license plate.[19] After putting the transmission in reverse, the monitor screen projected a clear image from behind the truck. This could be a lifesaver.[20] The Edge Evolution CTS is small accessory that provides a lot of truck performance potential, just touch the screen.[21] Do you think it’s in Performance Mode?
