The Mini-Truck That Keeps Coming Back

SOME trucks just refuse to stay in the past. Andy Harmon’s 1999 Toyota Tacoma, nicknamed Tuckoma, is one of them. Back in January 2004, it was a bright electric-green mini that graced the pages of Mini Truckin’ magazine. Fast-forward to 2018 when Andy scored it in a trade. He figured he would just freshen it up and keep its old-school look. Yeah… that plan didn’t last long.

 

With Darrell Poe Jr. (aka the master manipulator) in the mix, things quickly got serious. They started by cutting out the tired rear frame section and built a fresh back-half with a custom wishbone 3-link from Eric Young. Air Lift Dominator airbags were installed at each corner, 2,600-lb bags out back and 2,500-lb units up front, backed by Monroe shocks all around. They lowered the body over the frame by a solid 3 1⁄2 inches and added two Viair 444 compressors along with a 5-gallon AVS aluminum tank to ensure the truck remains aired up and ready to go. Tuckoma now sits right where it belongs and rolls on a set of Boyd Coddington Fury 18×7 wheels.

Andy Hawks at Krazy Carl’s Motorsports then laid down that killer Sinamon Stick Copper base with fresh ’90s-style graphics that make the truck pop.

The body got the full treatment, too. The guys welded in a new inner bed skin, bolted on 1999 4WD front fenders, added a ModShop Metalwerks roll pan and tailgate skin, and grafted a fresh roof skin after the old sliding ragtop finally gave up. A hood from Showdown Customs finished off the exterior accessories. Under the hood lies the original 2.4L four-banger that has been cleaned up and detailed. Inside, Tyler Smith recovered the factory bench in butterscotch and tan-colored vinyl with tweed accents. The rest of the cab features custom tweed panels created by Andy, Kenny Franklin, and Ashley Wimmer, and a Colorado Customs steering wheel planted proudly in front of the driver’s seat. A JVC head unit and Skar Audio speakers keep the tunes rolling.

Tuckoma isn’t just backÑit’s better than ever and ready to hit the next show. This Toyota is proof that a good mini-truck never really diesÑit just waits for the right owner to bring it back to life.
