In today’s world, the younger generation is taking bigger risks, using better cameras and getting more unique shots with each and every snap of the shutter. Generation after generation, we see trends rise and techniques sharpen, which makes for amazing content for you, the consumer. Most of the time we understand the practical concepts to these shots, but occasionally we scratch our heads with amazement at the latest crazy capture some young photographer submitted. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter The crew at Mach1Media has been on the rise over the last few years and everyone from East Coast to West Coast is taking notice. Their unique blend of angles and editing gives their style something that stands out, which is hard in the flooded world of media makers. To get some insight to this small crew, we sat down for a quick Q&A session with both Tucker Harris and Jonathan Daniels. INSTEAD OF COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER, WE DECIDED TO TEAM UP AND DO EVERYTHING WE COULD TO BE ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN MEDIA TEAMS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY ST How long have you guys been shooting? MIM Photography combined would be about 20 years of experience. Jon and I found our beginnings in rolling shots that came about from our love of automobiles and photography. We both were creating rolling shots for a few years before we met each other through Instagram. Instead of competing against each other, we decided to team up and do everything we could to be one of the best-known media teams in the automotive industry. We’ve been grinding toward that goal for a few years now, and it’s been the best decision ever. ST How about suggestions on things not to do? MIM We personally strongly dislike hanging out of an open truck bed. This isn’t a game where you can respawn if something bad happens like a video game. We take extra precautions to not endanger ourselves more than we already do. Also, do not shoot rollers in auto mode. The camera won’t be able to get you the motion you desire in auto mode. ST Have you had any run-ins with law? MIM Luckily, we’ve only had a few run-ins with the law. Nothing serious though. The biggest thing is not to congest busy roads and areas that have a lot of traffic, because it only takes one phone call to have the police on your butt in a crowded area. Then you’re definitely getting in trouble. Be safe, be courteous. ST What media editing software do you recommend? MIM Mach1Media use Adobe products only. Premiere Pro CC, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC. We will edit our pictures and then save the edit as a preset. Over the years we have amassed thousands of them, which help us speed up our workflow immensely. tips & tricks Put your camera in manual mode and try to match the shutter speed with the speed of the vehicle. Shoot as much as possible. Don’t let reputation or clout or anyone get in your head. Don’t be afraid to ask people to shoot. The worst they can say is no. Practice; these photos will not turn out perfectly every time. Don’t get discouraged because of that—it happens to myself. Just keep shooting until you get the shots you love. Love what you do! Art is meant to be explorative and fun, if something doesn’t work out, analyze, re-plan and attack again.
