Built on Grit, Gears, and Growth

THERE are some shops you visit where the energy hits you before you even walk through the door. Monster Transmission is one of those places. Tucked away in Florida, this powerhouse has become a household name in the world of performance transmissions. We’ve known about Monster for years, but after ordering one of its 4L65E units for our Project Rocky build, we decided to pick it up in person and see the magic firsthand.

Walking through the facility feels like touring a race shop mixed with a high-tech lab. Every transmission that rolls through Monster’s doors is torn down, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt from the ground up. Each unit is handled by a dedicated technician from start to finish, which guarantees real accountability and craftsmanship. Nothing gets boxed up until it passes a series of quality checks and test runs.

Monster Transmission started back in 2003 with a simple mission: build better transmissions that perform stronger and last longer than factory units. What began as a small-town operation has grown into a major player in the drivetrain world. Today, Monster builds everything from heavy-duty truck transmissions to race-ready automatics, along with torque converters, rebuild kits, and full conversion packages. Its lineup ranges from mild daily-driver builds to all-out performance monsters—each one backed by multi-year warranties that prove Monster stands behind its work.

In recent years, Monster became part of Burnout Brands, a larger family of performance companies that includes BD Diesel and D&J Precision Machine. The move has fueled growth across the board, giving Monster more resources, more reach, and more horsepower under one roof. Together, these brands represent a serious force in the aftermarket industry, blending powertrain expertise and customer-first service.

Back on the shop floor, you can see why Monster has built such a positive reputation. The team is passionate, the equipment is top-tier, and the results speak for themselves. After putting Monster’s 4L65E through its paces in Project Rocky, we can confidently say this company doesn’t just build transmissions; it builds confidence. From the first bolt to the first cruise, our new 4L65E transmission performed flawlessly. Smooth shifts, no leaks, no drama—just solid, reliable power.

When a core is chosen for rebuild, the crew at Monster first inspects it to be sure the housing is solid and capable of performing to their standards once complete.

The first step is teardown. The technician completely disassembles the transmission and removes all the internal parts.
Before the buildup, the case is sent to the next station to be sanded and cleaned completely. All the markings and debris are removed and prepped for a new paint color.

Now that the housing is clean and empty, the next step is to coat it with the color that was requested by the customer. We chose bright green to align with the Monster brand.

With the transmission housing fully coated, it can move onto final assembly. New upgraded parts are installed and tested to ensure reliability.
Once the assembly is finished, the ready-to-test transmission is moved along to the dyno testing area.

Testing on a dyno with fluid in the transmission will give the crew real-world feedback and performance data. This will also uncover any flaws in the build before it moves on to the customer.

The dyno combined with the computer software will ensure that the newly rebuilt transmission can handle the torque and pressure that a real vehicle will put into it. The crew will shift it through all gears and print out a full build sheet to go with the transmission.
Along with building a high-performance, reliable transmission, Monster also builds high-end torque converters for your specific setup.
One important step in the rebuild process is to clean and weld all the fin tabs inside the converter to make sure they stay in place throughout the life of this unit.
Each converter is meticulously detailed and reviewed by a technician.
Here you can see the completed internals with solid welds and a structured assembly.
With the internals complete, the converter can be assembled and sent to the next station.

A special welding machine lays down the perfect seam on each piece that is run through the process.
The last step is a new coat of paint, and it is ready to ship to the consumer.

Now that we had a firsthand view of how this operation works, we loaded up our new 4L65E and hit the road back to the shop, where Rocky was patiently waiting.
Now that the transmission has arrived at its new home, we just need to add a few important parts before we can install it.

4L65E
Our Lokar automatic shifter is the first part to be installed. We simply added the sleeves into the transmission locations.

4L65E
Next, we added the shifter linkage. This kit from Lokar works with any 4L60E or 4L65E transmission.
4L65E
We also needed to add our transmission fluid line fittings. We use PTFE lines, so we needed the correct fitting for our application.
4L65E
Finally we can install our new Monster Transmission 4L65E into our 1979 Chevy C10. We love the look and feel of this transmission and can highly recommend one for your project.
