Turning the Impossible Into Reality

NFAMUS AIR SUSPENSION HAS BUILT QUITE A FEW TRUCKS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, SOME OF WHICH HAVE BEEN THE PROPERTY OF GREG ORDUNO, A BUILDER BASED OUT OF CLEBURNE, TEXAS. He loves his old trucks, so when it came time to build the 1967-72 C-10 of his dreams, he went online and did some digging. After a few weeks, he found the perfect truck: a ’72 with a fresh restoration job including paint, a few mild custom touches and a reliable (but original) drivetrain. Money changed hands, and the deal was done. Now he just had to pick it up.

EVERYBODY SAID THAT STUFFING BIG WHEELS UNDER THE STOCK HOOD WAS IMPOSSIBLE AND, AFTER HEARING IT ENOUGH TIMES, IT BECAME COLLECTIVE WISDOM. KEITH WANTED TO CHALLENGE THAT NOTION…”

He took a trip to Michigan where the truck was located, but after the truck made it back to Texas, Greg spent all of 10 minutes behind the wheel before he delivered it to Keith Sawyer and his group at Nfamus to do their work. As Keith recalls, Greg tossed him the keys and said something like, “Call me when it’s done.” Okay then; challenge accepted.

Let’s just get this out up front: bringing a 1967-72 C-10 down to the ground has been done before, and we’ve all seen tons of cool customs with their rockers kissing the asphalt. What we haven’t seen are those same trucks rolling on 24s all the way around. Sure, they have 24s out back, but that’s the easy part. Everybody said that stuffing big wheels under the stock hood was impossible and, after hearing it enough times, it became collective wisdom. Keith wanted to challenge that notion by not only doing 24s all the way around, but making them as big and wide as possible in the process. With that in mind, he set to work.

THOSE REAR LIPS ARE SO BIG YOU’D THINK THEY BELONGED TO A HEAVILY BOTOXED CELEBRITY.

This truck is all about the suspension. The front sports QA1 adjustable shocks, custom tubular control arms, CPP 2-inch drop spindles and a lot of massaging to tuck the 24- inch Intro Rallys under the slightly modified hood. (It’s still stock on the outside, but the inner sheet metal was notched to clear the tubs.) Out back, the 3-link suspension with track bar may be similar to what the factory did, but this one is all custom and designed to work around 24×15 (yes, 15- inch-wide) billet rear wheels. Those tires are Pirelli 405/25s, by the way, just in case you were wondering what kind of rubber band was necessary to fit the wheels under the bed rails.

MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE IS NOT ONLY A TESTAMENT TO KEITH’S ABILITIESAT NFAMUS, BUT ALSO GREG’S FAITH IN HIS WORK.”

THE BOLTLESS WOOD BED KIT CLEANS UP THE BACK END. CHECK OUT HOW HIGH THOSE REAR TUBS GO.

As for the rest of the truck, as it sits today, most of it is the same as it was when Greg first picked it up. The interior is clean, with leather bucket seats and a few billet touches. It’s powered by a tried-and-true 350/700R4 combo that was gone through by the previous owner and still motivates the truck reliably today. The paint, while clean, does sport a few of the imperfections that come with cutting up a truck so that it can lay on big wheels; but, since Greg’s shooting for a new color at some point anyway, that’s not a very big deal.

NOW GREG HAS A DECISION TO MAKE: ENJOY THE TRUCK AS IS, WITH ITS LITTLE FLAWS HERE AND THERE, OR PUT IT BACK IN THE SHOP AND WAIT UNTIL IT’S FULLY DONE TO TAKE HIS TIME BEHIND THE WHEEL.”

ARE 24S UNDER THE HOOD IMPOSSIBLE? NAH, THAT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY AT NFAMUS.

It’s a work in progress, but what has been done so far is nothing short of amazing. Making the impossible possible is not only a testament to Keith’s abilities at Nfamus, but also Greg’s faith in his work. Now Greg has a decision to make: enjoy the truck as is, with its little flaws here and there, or put it back in the shop and wait until it’s fully done to take his time behind the wheel. It looks to us like a win-win situation.
