What can cause engine paint to fail?

Engine paint typically fails due to poor surface preparation, using the wrong paint for high temperatures, and improper application techniques, which leads to peeling, cracking, discoloration, softening, and burn-off. The KBS Motor Coater Kit provides everything needed to prevent these failures.

What’s included in the kit for proper prep and coating?

For complete preparation of engines and transmissions, the Motor Coater Kit includes KBS Klean and RustBlast, while Motor Coater Engine Enamel is formulated to deliver durable, high-temperature performance.

  • KBS Klean is a concentrated, water-based and biodegradable cleaner that penetrates deep to remove stubborn dirt, grease, and grime, leaving no residue to interfere with adhesion.
  • RustBlast is a powerful rust remover, zinc phosphate pre-primer, and metal etch. It effectively eliminates rust, corrosion, metal oxides, and tarnish, while etching the surface for optimal paint adhesion.
  • Motor Coater Engine Enamel is a high-performance, durable enamel designed to withstand consistent temperatures of 450°F and resist oil, gas, and chemicals. Available in 41 rich, deep colors, it meets OEM standards and, with proper prep, won’t blister, flake, crack, or peel. It applies easily by brush, roller, or spray equipment, providing excellent coverage and a smooth, brush-mark-free finish.
  • KBS #1 Thinner is included to thin Motor Coater for spray equipment applications.

Preparation Procedure

The cleaner the surface with KBS Klean, the more effective RustBlast can treat the metal, allowing Motor Coater to penetrate deeper into the surface for a stronger seal and longer-lasting protection.

1. Preparation begins with abrasive removal of loose flaking rust and paint.

2. Next grease, grime and other contaminants are scrubbed away with a solution of KBS Klean and hot water.

3. RustBlast is then applied to dissolve and neutralize remaining rust and provide an etched surface for adhesion of Motor Coater Engine Enamel. RustBlast eliminates the need to remove every last trace of rust before coating, making preparation faster and less labor-intensive.

This process ensures the surface is clean, conditioned, and properly prepared for strong adhesion and long-lasting performance of Motor Coater Engine Enamel.

Application of Motor Coater Engine Enamel

Motor Coater Engine Enamel can be applied with spray equipment, or by brush or roller as its self-leveling properties eliminate brush marks for a smooth finish.

  • In most cases, a single full coat of Motor Coater covers completely with full color depth, however, a second coat can be applied within 30 minutes or after 7 days.
  • For proper curing thick paint coats are avoided.
  • Painted components can be gently handled after 2–4 hours; full hardness is achieved after 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can metallic colors of Motor Coater be brushed?

Yes, apply Motor Coater, allow it to set for a few minutes, then lightly brush the surface in one direction. This second pass helps bring the metallic pigments to the surface, creating a smooth finish with enhanced metallic sparkle.

Is a primer or prep coating needed before applying Motor Coater Engine Enamel?

For best results, clean the surface with KBS Klean and etch with RustBlast before applying Motor Coater. On rust-prone, pitted, or coarse surfaces, KBS RustSeal can be applied first. RustSeal smooths the surface and permanently stops rust from forming beneath the finish coat.

Is heat curing required, or will Motor Coater fully air cure in seven days?

Motor Coater does not need to be heat cured; it is cured simply by ambient air. However, cure time can be accelerated through heat cycling—wait 12 hours after painting, then place the part in direct sunlight for one hour, followed by one hour in the shade. Repeat as needed.

Is Motor Coater UV resistant?

Yes, Motor Coater is fully UV stable and designed to hold up to consistent sun exposure.

Can Motor Coater be applied to brake calipers?

Yes, Motor Coater is an ideal high-temperature paint for brake calipers and also adheres well to a wide range of automotive components.

A Proven System for Long-Lasting Engine Protection and Finish
