The 1960-66 GMC C/K series pickup is easily one of the most distinctive light-duty trucks in GM’s automotive history. Everything about it speaks of its uniquely salt-of-the-earth American character. The C/K has always been a hard-working truck employed in a broad range of responsibilities ranging from rough and tumble farm and construction work to transporting the very affluent. It’s an honest truck with a solid work ethic loved by many. It’s never lost its edge.

It’s been these classic and distinctive GMC and Chevy pickups that gave birth to the pickup craze of modern times, where if you don’t own a pickup you ain’t Jack. .

A RATHER INTIMIDATING SIGHT FOR THE UNINFORMED BECAUSE THIS C-10 SITS SMACK ON THE GROUND, YET IT’S READY FOR ACTION THE MINUTE LOREN SPINS THE CAM LOBES.

In America, we love pickup trucks and are unafraid to make them anything we want them to be from wild and crazy off- road beasts to down low, striking hot rods like this ’64 GMC born of Loren Sharrard’s talent and raw ability. “I built this truck from the ground up,” Loren tells Street Trucks, “right down to every bracket and all of the custom parts.” Loren found the aftermarket doesn’t always make everything we need to build a custom truck. Sometimes, you have to find the resources to do it yourself.

The Sherrard GMC pickup project has been something of a family affair from the beginning, like a lot of other GM treasures in the Sherrard corral. Loren’s son Brian fabricated the entire 6.2L LS engine twin-turbo system from scratch. His nephew Mark Sharrard built the LS3 power plant with machining assistance from Blue Monkey Performance in Phoenix. A lot of strict attention went into this LS project, including block and head deburring, a Billy Briggs custom- grind turbo cam, GM LS3 823 head castings, a pair of Borg-Warner S-300 turbochargers and a Nick Williams 90mm throttle body. Open up wide and say “boowhaaaa!”

VOID OF THE BED, YOU GET TO SEE WHY LOREN OPTED FOR GOOD BONES IN A BULLETPROOF BOXED STEEL FRAME. YOU NEED THIS KIND OF RAW STRENGTH WHEN YOU’RE PLANNING AS MUCH AS 1,200 HP AND MORE THAN 900 FTLBS OF TORQUE. BETWEEN THE RAILS REST A POLY FUEL CELL, AIR PUMP AND TANK AND A COMPLETE 4-LINK AIRBAG SYSTEM.

INSIDE, LOREN KEPT HIS SURROUNDINGS STOCK AND ORIGINAL ASIDE FROM ENGINE VITALS INSTRUMENTATION. THAT’S THE FACTORY BENCH SEAT FROM DOOR TO DOOR. NOTICE ALL OF THE WEAR AND TEAR MARKS FROM 50 YEARS OF USE.

What all this engine data means for Loren is mind-bending power from an American staple. With 15 psi of boost from the S-300 turbochargers, Loren witnesses a whopping 1,000 hp and 903 ft-lbs of torque. In daily driving, Loren wants a more civilized package with just 5 psi of boost for 650 hp and twist. Be assured, you will never leave this man sitting at a traffic light. GM’s hardy 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission makes the going easier because it transmits power with firm decisiveness.

To build a down-low ride like this takes a lot of patience, advanced thought and an abundance of knowledge. Because Loren’s LS makes unwieldy amounts of power, a box stock chassis wasn’t going to be enough. This thing had to have the solidity of a brick without compromise. This is a custom-built steel box chassis engineered to do exactly what Loren envisioned. It’s raised from the cab to the tailgate.

“…OUR PASSION FOR THESE SHORT WHEELBASE C/K RIDES NEVER REALLY CHANGES. IT’S ONGOING, AS IS OUR PURSUIT OF PERFECTION.”

THIS IS REAL MONSTER MASH POWER FROM THE GENERAL: THE LS3 6.2L ENGINE PACKING TWIN TURBO POWER VIA A PAIR OF S-300 HAIRDRYERS AND A 90MM THROTTLE BODY. LOREN’S SON BRIAN FABRICATED THIS COMPLEX TWIN TURBO SYSTEM FOR 650 HP AT 5 PSI OR 1,000-PLUS HP AT 15 PSI. FORCED INDUCTION IS WHERE REAL POWER COMES FROM.

Loren’s C-10 has a Strange 9-inch 33-spline rearend with 3.25:1 cogs unified via a Detroit Locker. This bulletproof rearend is flanked by a 4-link airbag suspension system Loren built himself. In front are C4 Corvette spindles and disc brakes piloted by a Mustang steering rack for crisp control. Those are American Racing Torq-Thrust wheels fore and aft wrapped in Generals. Driveshaft safety loops keep Loren protected when he’s on the throttle. There’s nothing quite like the sound of an GM LS V-8 through Dynomax 4-inch bullet mufflers for real sewer pipe-sized throat and performance.

As you might imagine, Loren’s GMC rocket ship is a work in progress that’ll never really be finished. That’s because our passion for these short wheelbase C/K rides never really changes. It’s ongoing, as is our pursuit of perfection. ST
