If you guys have been keeping up with the build of our 2001 S-10 Extreme, you know we are getting close to driving it! Chace Yonts and I were determined to get this thing out on the open road before the end of the year. When we left off at The Shop, the truck was ready for the air management to be installed, the bed to be cut, and everything to mount up the wheels and tires. To get the best ride possible, we went with the Airlift Performance 3H kit. The kit comes with everything you need—from air lines to wiring harnesses. We also picked up the 28-inch 5-gallon FLO Tank which will look amazing when mounted up. We also decided to go with a dual Viair 485C compressor setup to maximize the performance of the air management system. Viair’s new compressors are extremely quiet and their performance is outstanding.

Chace started off this part of the process by making sure that the rear bags were lined up perfectly and tightened down so that we could begin running the air lines.

With the fittings installed to the top of the bags, we hooked up the air line and routed it down the edge of the C-notch and along the frame. It is very important to map out where the lines will run so that they will not be crushed. After the back, Chace and Billy routed the lines for the front. Chace secured the lines and tucked them out of the way for now until the bed is ready to be reinstalled.

While Billy finished securing the air lines to the frame, Chace and I moved on to the bed of the truck. Chace measured from the bed bolt mounts to the beginning of the C-notch to locate the section of the bed we needed to cut out. With the lines marked, it was time to start cutting! Once the bed floor section was removed, we also needed to cut a section out of the wheel wells for the notch. This would allow the bed to sit flush on the frame mounts.

Before going any further, we laid out the FLO Tank, Viair Compressors and Airlift manifold to figure out where to place everything inside the bed. Chace came up with a great idea and began mounting the tank to the back of the bed. This would allow us to have some extra room and showcase each part of the air management system.

Once we decided on the mounting location for the compressors and manifold, we drilled the holes and started bolting them to the bed floor. The AVS pedestals made this entire process much easier as we were able to get the compressors and the manifold up off the floor and at an angle.

Chace went back through and made sure all of the bolts were tightened down so that none of the air management would come loose.

Next, we installed all of the fittings and the water trap to the FLO tank. Be careful not to overtighten any of the fittings as this can damage the tank. We were then able to hook up the main compressor line to the tank.

With the manifold and compressors ready to go, we could then cut out the holes for the AVS bulkhead union plate. This makes connecting and disconnecting airlines a breeze, especially when you need to remove the truck bed. Once the holes were drilled, we secured the airlines to the fittings and connected them to the Airlift manifold.

Now, we needed to decide how we were going to run the main wiring for the air management system. Chace came up with another great idea. Inside the cabin, we removed the plastic cover and jack from the back wall. This spot will make a perfect mounting location for the Airlift relays as well as all the wiring. Chace removed the bracket and started cutting out a hole for the wiring to enter the cab.

Chace was then able to cut a hole in the back of the bed as well. With the holes now cut, we were able to route the Airlift manifold connector out of the back of the cab. This will make hooking everything up much easier once we get the bed mounted up.

Once the relays were mounted, Chace and I began running the Airlift harness under the panels and toward the front of the truck. Airlift’s creative design makes installation super easy. Since we are running dual compressors, we picked up the second compressor harness, which is plug-n-play. The gray wire from the main harness connects directly into the dual compressor harness, making this entire process super easy! The pink wire from the main harness runs to a switched ignition source. We were able to use the included fuse tap and run the wire under the dash and into the fuse panel on the driver’s side.

Chace and I then decided to run the other part of the Airlift harness under the truck and along the frame to the engine bay. This way, we could secure the harness without risk of it getting in the way later.

We could then connect the power and ground wires from the Airlift harness to the battery.

It was finally time to get the bed back on the truck. This meant we needed as many friends as we could get to help. With the help of Tabby, Chace, Billy, James Hector Fannin, as well as a few others, we were able to get the bed lifted over the notch and down onto the frame. However, we needed to cut out a little more of the bed to make it fit perfectly. Don’t forget to line up the gas filler neck when getting the bed back on the frame.

With the manifold and compressors ready to go, we could then cut out the holes for the AVS bulkhead union plate. This makes connecting and disconnecting airlines a breeze, especially when you need to remove the truck bed. Once the holes were drilled, we secured the airlines to the fittings and connected them to the Airlift manifold.

With the bed in place, we could now run the harness into the bed and hook up the Airlift manifold. Chace got underneath the truck and connected the airline to the bottom of the fitting in the bed. We then carefully wrapped all the wiring up, secured it to the back of the cab and reinstalled the plastic cover. Now all the wiring is hidden and out of the way.

It was finally time for wheels and tires! The Nexen AU7s are an ultra high performance all-season tire and they are beasts! These tires are the perfect mix of superior traction and ultimate comfort. The 20-inch Foose Legend wheels will look great wrapped in these all season Nexen Tires! Chace called up Matt and Jeremy over at J&K Automotive and Accessories in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Chace dropped the wheels and tires off with Matt and Jeremy and they got to work mounting and balancing the tires for us.

All that was left was to connect the Airlift Controller and get the air management system programmed. The configuration process takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and it makes sure there are no issues with the system. Since we did not have enough time to get the height sensors installed just yet, we set everything based on pressure.

With the air management system working properly, we could finally get Project Lucid Dreams off jack stands and on the ground for the first time.

Chace and I took the truck for an alignment and got everything squared away. After a long week working on the truck, it was time for a little break!

The low profile 245/35/20 Nexen tires we chose barely fit behind the Xtreme body kit, but the ride quality is perfect!

As summer is starting to come to an end, the all-season Nexens will keep me on the road no matter the time of year.

With the air management system working and the truck drivable, it was time to make the trip back home to Knoxville, Tennessee. The truck has come a long way in just a few short months!
