There’s something different about shooting an event when the backdrop is just as impressive as the builds, and that’s exactly what you get at the OBX Rod & Custom Festival.
Rolling into the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina for the first time, representing Street Trucks, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found was one of the most laid-back, scenic, and genuinely fun automotive events I’ve covered in a while. Set around Nags Head and the surrounding OBX towns, the show spreads out across multiple locations, mixing cruise-ins, static displays, and local hangouts instead of packing everything into one crowded lot.
From behind the lens, it was nonstop action. Trucks were everywhere from classic F-100s to slammed OBS builds to lifted late models, but what stood out was how these rigs were being used. You’d see guys cruising from one stop to the next, catching ocean views, then pulling into a packed lot full of builds from all over the East Coast. This isn’t a “park it and stare at it” kind of show. It’s a drive-it and enjoy-it kind of weekend.

With that said, the cars definitely showed up, too. Clean hot rods, wild customs, and some seriously detailed classics filled in the gaps between the trucks, giving the whole event a well-rounded feel. It didn’t matter what you were into; there was something here that made you stop, grab the camera, and take a second look.
One of the coolest parts of the event is the atmosphere. It’s family-friendly, easygoing, and built around community just as much as the vehicles. There’s food, vendors, and plenty to do, but nothing feels rushed or over-the-top. It’s just good people, cool rides, and one of the best coastal settings you can ask for.
And beyond the trucks and cars, there’s a bigger purpose behind it all. The event supports local charities, giving back to the community that hosts it year after year.
By the end of the weekend, I had a full memory card and a new appreciation for what this event brings to the table. For a first-time visit, OBX Rod & Custom Festival definitely delivered, and it’s one I’d recommend adding to your list.
