Coronavirus shakes up America’s truck market: GM outselling Ford and Ram

While late-March sales declines hit just about every major automaker in one way or another, the model-by-model results weren’t nearly so uniform. And because the market tends to be a zero-sum game, for every winner, there generally has to be a loser.

In this case, that winner was GM, and its rise had to come at the expense of another automaker, in this case, Ford. F-Series sales dropped 13.1 percent in the first quarter of 2020, while sales of GM’s full-sized Silverado and Sierra surged nearly 28% in the same period. FCA’s Ram lineup managed a steady-as-she-goes 7% increase.

All-in, GM finished the quarter with 197,743 full-size trucks sold to Ford’s 186,562. Here’s the full breakdown:

The Chevy Silverado Might Never Recover Enough To Beat Ram

Chevy had a good third-quarter for truck sales, with Silverado sales up 16 percent compared to the second quarter as 155,482 moved. But that wasn’t enough to get out of third-place in Detroit’s truck wars, as Ram bested them again, as they did in the second quarter. Chevy will have to get used to the view from third.

Ram sold 161,635 trucks in the third quarter to remain second, while the all-conquering Ford F-Series sold 214,176, a six-percent dip for them but more than enough to remain in first place, per the Detroit Free Press. GM as a company bested the Ford F-Series if you add in GMC Sierra sales (66,198), but let’s not kid ourselves.

Ford is Recalling 200,000 F150 Trucks for Headlights That Stay on Too Long

Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling 166,196 2018-19 F-150 pickups in the U.S. and 50,989 in Canada over an LED headlight problem: The running lamps in the affected trucks stay on even when manually switched from auto lamp to the low-beam position. They’re supposed to dim to parking-light intensity. Ford said in a statement the problem could “reduce the visibility of other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.”

2020 Chevrolet Silverado HDs, GMC Sierra HDs Hood Latch: Recall Alert

Approximately 1,900 model-year 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD pickups

The Problem: The hood-latch striker wires may not have been heat-treated properly, possibly causing them to fracture and the hood to unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the hood assembly for free.

What Owners Should Do: Chevrolet and GMC manufacturer GM will begin notifying owners April 26. Report: Ford Bronco Will Debut, Finally, in March

The Broncopalooza is nigh: It’s looking like we’ll see the new Ford Bronco sooner than we thought, with the off-roader’s smaller sibling, the Bronco Sport, to follow soon after. According to our friends at Automotive News, Ford executives recently told a dealer gathering that the Bronco will be unveiled in March, with the reveal of the smaller “Baby Bronco,” dubbed the Bronco Sport, to follow in April (likely at the New York auto show).

The 2020 Nissan Frontier Is Going To Be Weird

The next Frontier, according to Nissan’s press release, is only going to have one engine pick: a 3.8-liter direct-injection gasoline V6 claiming 310 HP and 281 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic. “Two-wheel drive or four” will be the only choice left, there.

No fuel economy claims have been posted yet but if it’s not significantly better than the current truck’s 23-mpg highway max, Nissan’s engineers will have wasted a lot of time.

So I guess that means the 2020 truck is going to be a one-year-only second-gen body with the third-gen engine. If you want the new propulsion system but like the old (ancient) design, now’s your chance! It just might be a little annoying when you’re parts shopping later and constantly have to double-check what’s compatible.
